Pediatric Nephrology Centers
Oregon has one comprehensive pediatric nephrology program โ OHSU Doernbecher in Portland. Families in eastern Oregon (Bend, Pendleton, Burns) are 3โ6 hours away. Southern Oregon families are often closer to Sacramento or San Francisco than to Portland.
Fetal nephrology: Doernbecher offers prenatal counseling and care for kidney conditions diagnosed before birth โ one of the few programs in the Pacific Northwest to provide fetal nephrology. If your child has been diagnosed with a kidney condition in utero, ask your OB for a referral to the OHSU maternal-fetal medicine and pediatric nephrology teams.
Eastern and southern Oregon care gap: Families east of the Cascades (Bend, Pendleton, La Grande, Burns) and in southern Oregon (Medford, Ashland) face 3โ6 hour drives to Portland. Many southern Oregon families access UCSF Benioff or Stanford (CA). Eastern Oregon families close to the WA border may access Seattle Children's. Doernbecher has outreach clinics in Eugene and Salem to reduce travel burden for the Willamette Valley.
